‘When did this latest card arrive?’ asked Sukey.

Mrs Wingate looked embarrassed. ‘Actually, it was among the letters I picked up the day you were last here,’ she admitted. ‘I didn’t think to look through them at the time… they seemed to be mostly junk mail… you know how it is.’

‘Never mind.’ Sukey studied the card a little more closely. It was a picture of the Parthenon, postmarked Athens and posted about two weeks earlier. The message was brief and uninformative: Dear Auntie Sab, Having a brill time, weather fab but a bit too hot the day we climbed up here. I’ve had my first swig of ouzo (Dad wouldn’t let me have a whole one to myself!). Lots of love, Annie Bee.

‘It doesn’t tell us much, does it?’ said Mrs Wingate. ‘Annie sounds fairly young,’ said Sukey thoughtfully. ‘Her language and her handwriting are quite childish.’

‘I suppose Bee is a nickname?’ Mrs Wingate suggested.

‘Or B might be the first letter of her surname,’ said Sukey. ‘Maybe there’s another Annie in her form at school and her friends use it to distinguish between them. Let’s check in Sabrina’s phone book.’ She picked up the personal directory that lay beside the telephone and checked under B. ‘It’s not much help,’ she sighed. ‘There’s only one entry and that’s a Dr Brinton. Would he be a partner in the practice you mentioned last time I came?’

‘Yes, of course he is; I see him myself.’ Mrs Wingate waxed enthusiastic. ‘He’s such a wonderful doctor, and such a nice man. His wife’s nice too, and they have a lovely little daughter… she’s about six, I think, and the image of her daddy.’

‘You’ve met his family?’

‘Oh no, but he has a picture of them on the desk in his surgery. I always enquire after them when I visit him… I think doctors spend so much time listening to other people’s troubles and they appreciate it when someone shows a little interest in them.’

‘Quite.’ Sukey was beginning to find Mrs Wingate’s loquacity a little wearing. ‘I don’t suppose you happen to know the little girl’s name?’

‘I’m afraid I don’t. I could ask him on Monday if you like; I have an appointment to see him in the morning. It’s a routine check-up,’ she ran on. ‘He likes to see his woman patients of a, well you know, a certain age every so often, just to make sure everything’s in good order.’ She gave a self-conscious titter and then added earnestly, ‘He’s such a caring doctor and all his patients think the world of him.’

‘I’m sure they do,’ said Sukey. She had been riffling through the pages of the book while Mrs Wingate was speaking and was surprised at the small number of entries.

‘Have you found something interesting?’ asked Mrs Wingate on seeing her jotting down some of the numbers.

‘I don’t know until I’ve checked.’ Sukey closed the book and put it back in its place. ‘Thank you for your help. I hope your check-up is OK, and if your doctor’s daughter’s name is Annie, would you let me know?’

‘Of course I will.
